What is OMR Software
OMR software recognizes filled in checkboxes on paper forms and captures the marks as readable value data, such as (A,B,C,D or whatever the value is inside the captured checkboxes) The captured analysis data is then exported to a spreadsheet or other management software. The OMR software process can be completed by printing your own paper forms and using an existing computer and scanner, without the need to buy added expensive equipment.
The paper forms used with OMR software are called OMR sheets and are printed from a template designed to be compatible with the OMR software being used. OMR software may have it’s own built in OMR sheet editor which makes it easy to create and print forms that are automatically compatible with the software, or the OMR software may require OMR sheets which are designed using a word processor to create the checkboxes using special fonts. These designed OMR sheet templates must be trained to be recognized by the OMR software which can be difficult if you are inexperienced.
The checkboxes on OMR sheets are filled in with a dark pen or pencil in answer to questions or statements which are used in multiple choice exams, tests, assessments, surveys, ballot forms, order forms and checklists. OMR sheets used with OMR software are often called bubble sheets or answer sheets because they contain circular or oval checkboxes which are easy to fill in fully by people responding to the questions. Fully filled in checkboxes turn out clearer on the scanned omr sheet images which makes it less likely that errors will occur with the detection of the filled checkboxes.
OMR software is used when paper forms are the most practical and cost effective way to collect information from people’s multiple choice responses. When using OMR software the OMR sheets are scanned with an image scanner, preferably a document scanner with a paper feeding tray, and the scanned image files of omr sheets are uploaded into the OMR software which will automatically detect which checkboxes are filled in.
OMR software has a high rate of accuracy and can capture response data from scanned omr sheet images at around 30 pages per minute. The captured checkbox data can then be transferred to a spreadsheet or other management software for further analysis.
OMR software is used for fast collection of checkbox response information from satisfaction surveys, evaluation surveys, tests, exams, assessments, checklists, quality assurance forms, ballot papers and any checkbox response paper forms that can be designed to be compatible with the software.
Requirements for OMR Software
OMR software is cost effective to use requiring only:
- Printed plain paper OMR sheets that are OMR software compatible.
- A regular printer for printing the paper OMR sheets.
- A recent model computer for running the OMR software.
- A decent quality document scanner for scanning the OMR sheets which have been filled in by the respondents of surveys, tests, exams and assessments.
OMR Software Data Capture
OMR sheet scanned images are uploaded into the OMR software which recognizes each page then detects and captures and the dark marks from filled in checkbox bubbles using a comparison process that compares the number of black pixels in each checkbox. The detected checkboxes are captured and converted into checkbox value data such as A, B, C or D.
OMR software also captures barcode information from printed barcodes or uniqe barcode labels, used for identifying each page, locating where the checkbox areas appear and linking captured data with the respondent of each page.
The captured data is stored in the OMR software then exported to an excel spreadsheet or other external management software intalled on your computer.

Uses for OMR Software
Paper OMR sheets are used for collecting multiple choice responses from answer sheet exams, checkbox surveys, multiple choice assessments, quality assurance sheets, quizzes, evaluations, score sheets, checklists and ballot papers. Anytime paper forms are used for collecting people’s checkbox responses in answer to multiple choice questions or to choose a statement.
